An Instructionally Related Activity is defined as an activity and/or laboratory experience that is partially sponsored by an academic discipline or department and which are, in the judgment of the President, an integral part of the instructional experience.
Matriculated CSUSB students pay a fee included in their tuition to support Instructionally Related Activities. The IRA fee is considered to be a campus-based fee (Category II).
A handful of allocations are determined by policy-driven formulae (administrative fees, copyrights, intercollegiate athletics, and intramural sport clubs). The allocation of the rest of the funds is managed by the IRA Advisory Board, which comprises six students, three faculty, and two administrators. They consider requests and make recommendations to the campus President (or their designee), who makes the final decision.
Currently established programs may apply to receive funding for each academic year following the program's establishment. New programs may apply for IRA funding once the budget has been reviewed, approved and a call for new proposals has been sent out to the campus community. All new programs must apply before the seventh week of each fall term.
