Plan an Activity

Plan an Activity or Demonstration

CSUSB supports students, organizations, employees, and members of the public who wish to engage in lawful expressive activity.

Planning ahead can help ensure that your activity is safe, accessible, organized, and respectful of the rights of others.

Activities may include

  • Demonstrations and protests
  • Marches and rallies
  • Tabling and information sharing
  • Distribution of literature
  • Petition or signature collection
  • Guest speakers and public programs
  • Artistic or symbolic expression
  • Counter-protests

Before your activity

Consider the following:

  • Where will the activity take place?
  • How many people are expected?
  • Will amplified sound be used?
  • Will tables, tents, stages, or other equipment be needed?
  • Will the activity involve movement across campus?
  • Are accessibility, interpretation, or other support needs involved?
  • Could the activity affect access to buildings, classes, services, or events?
  • Are reservations, scheduling, or other approvals required?

Connect with Campus Partners

The university encourages individuals and groups to contact the appropriate campus office in advance when possible. Early communication can help identify locations, scheduling requirements, accessibility needs, safety considerations, and available resources.

Spontaneous activities

Some spontaneous expressive activities may take place without advance scheduling in areas and circumstances permitted by university policy.

Spontaneous activities must still comply with applicable laws and university policies and may not substantially disrupt university operations, prevent access, or create a safety threat.

Accessibility and Inclusion

CSUSB encourages organizers to consider accessibility as part of event planning.

Depending on the activity, this may include:

  • Accessible locations and pathways
  • Seating or rest areas
  • Interpreting or captioning
  • Accessible signs and materials
  • Alternative formats
  • Transportation or mobility considerations
  • Communication about accommodations

During the activity

Participants should:

  • Follow lawful instructions related to safety and access
  • Keep entrances, exits, sidewalks, and emergency routes accessible
  • Avoid blocking classes, offices, services, or scheduled events
  • Respect the right of others to participate, observe, or decline participation
  • Avoid threats, violence, property damage, or physical contact without consent
  • Follow applicable rules regarding sound, structures, signs, materials, and cleanup

After the activity

Organizers should:

  • Remove materials and equipment
  • Dispose of waste
  • Report safety concerns or incidents
  • Connect participants with support resources if needed
  • Share feedback about the planning process
