Sam Aguba (she/he)
Current Status:
Undergraduate Student in the Department of English
Public Speaking Experience:
I was formerly a Pre-Nursing major before I was an English major, and my exposure to communications courses aided in my interest and development in my public speaking skills greatly. Since then, I have had the honor of delivering informational classroom presentations through working at the Tutoring Center on campus, which require visuals (personally designed by myself) and a strong tone that I developed throughout my academic career; this ranged from my involvement as officer for extracurricular clubs in high school to university, to my experience personally communicating with peers while tutoring.
Why I work for the Speaking Center at JHBC:
I work at the Speaking Center because I genuinely wish to help aid connection/communication on campus in some way. Public speaking contributes to a lot of factors in our lives, like how we socialize with each other and present ourselves; I want my fellow peers to understand that sharpening these skills can really do a lot for self-confidence and their academic goals. I have a strong admiration for those who are able to do outreach for the community (hence why I would like to contribute in my own little way) and the way to start looking for that connection within ourselves is to ensure we are able to articulate what we need and express to others what we want.
My Consultant Philosophy:
Faking it until you make it should not feel so daunting. You are allowed to breathe and take it slow; there is room for mistakes, and as long as you are trying your genuine best, that is all that matters.
