Camelia Fowler, the community partnerships analyst with Cal State San Bernardino’s Office of Community Engaged Learning, recently completed a 12-week professional development program with IMPACT Strategies, founded by political strategist and advocate Angela Rye.

The program consisted of media, policy, public relations and podcast cohorts. Participants were required to attend bi-weekly general assemblies, which included guest speakers such as Rye, Ashley Allison (CNN contributor), Georgia Fort (independent journalist), and Janina Lundy (executive for Hartbeat), along with completing weekly group projects within their assigned cohorts.IMPACT Strategies -- Camelia Fowler

Speakers shared insights about their respective interests and career paths while encouraging a community of support, curiosity and advocacy. Fowler was selected for the program after applying for the opportunity in fall and participating in group interviews.

“At first, I felt the program was not for me, but I’m thankful that I applied anyway and was able to be a part of a group that embodied Black excellence, professional development, and a community of creativity and support,” Fowler said.

One of Fowler’s biggest takeaways from the program was the time Rye and the instructors dedicated to mentoring participants and connecting them with prominent professionals who could help support their career growth.

The “PDP (professional development program) was an amazing opportunity, and I am extremely grateful to have been a part of it,” Fowler said.
