Katy Rodriguez Wimberly, assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been selected as part of the 2026 cohort of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) Harlow Shapley Visiting Lecturers, a national program that connects leading astronomers with students and communities across the country.

Wimberly is one of 21 astronomers chosen nationwide for the prestigious program, which supports faculty in sharing their research through engaging, accessible talks while inspiring curiosity about the universe. This year’s cohort will visit destinations in 17 states across the country. As a Shapley Visiting Lecturer, Rodriguez Wimberly will visit Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, where she will present public lectures and participate in community engagement activities with students and local organizations.

Founded in 1958, the AAS Shapley Visiting Lectures Program provides opportunities for astronomers to connect directly with diverse audiences, offering presentations that make complex scientific ideas approachable and meaningful. Each visit includes several days of engagement designed to foster connections between scientists, students and the broader community.

Rodriguez Wimberly’s selection reflects CSUSB’s dedication to expanding access to science education and empowering students to explore and pursue careers in STEM fields. For more information about the AAS Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectures Program, visit the American Astronomical Society website.
