This program allows students to complete a BS-Chemistry, Chemistry concentration and MS Materials Science, Interdisciplinary Materials concentration in as little as 5 years (starting at a freshman) or 3 years (for upper division transfer students).
BS-Chemistry, Chemistry Concentration students at CSUSB are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned between 70 and 115 total units with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
To apply, students must
- Identify a potential research advisor in the porgram (this person may already be a research advisor) and secure a letter of support, to be emailed to the graduate advisor (kcousins@csusb.edu)
- If the potential research advisor has worked with the student less than three months, secure a second letter of recommendation from another academic instructor, to be emailed to the graduate advisor (kcousins@csusb.edu)
- Submit a 1-2 page Statement of Interest: Why do you want to participate in the program, and why material science? How is this part of your professional journey?
- Submit an unofficial transcript
When all application materials have been received, a graduate committee (made up for faculty teaching in the program) will review the materials. If entry into the program is appoved, the graduate advisor and student will complete the CAPE Blended Program Undergraduate Entry Form. After the Graduate Studies Office approves the student, they are moved into the blended program from the BS Chemistry program.
After acceptance to the program, students can use the Blended program curriculum to continue to work toward the BS degree, and can enroll in graduate (6000 level) courses for credit.
Once the student reaches 120 units they automatically move to graduate status for financial aid purposes. This may impact financial aid, and should be discussed with the graduate advisor prior to entering the CAPE Blended Program.
Transition to Graduate status requires the student and graduate advisor to complete the CAPE Blended Program Graduate Form. The student will be officially considered admitted to the graduate program in the following semester, assuming the term deadlines are met: March 1 (Fall transition) / October 1 (Spring transition).
