Hispanic Heritage Month, which officially takes place Sept. 15-Oct. 15, gets an early start at CSUSB when the LatinX Center hosts the AfroLatinX Carnival from noon-3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12 on Coyote Walk.
Annika Anderson (sociology), Rigaud Joseph (social work) and Paul Jones (social work lecturer) of CSUSB’s Project Rebound published a paper on the efficacy of programs that provide support services to formerly incarcerated college students, and Enrique Murillo Jr. (education) was mentioned in an article about the naming of LEAD Summit XII’s honorary chairs.
Both are familiar with the summit’s theme, “¡Ya Basta! – Enough is Enough!: Education and Violence in the Context of our Schools, Community Safety, and Law-Enforcement,” having experienced different strands of it, said Enrique Murillo Jr., executive director of LEAD. Registration for LEAD Summit XII is now open online.
Mike Stull (entrepreneurship) encouraged the business community to submit nominations for the 2023 Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards, Enrique Murillo Jr. (education) wrote on the passing of activist Roberto Cintli Rodriguez, and Barbara Sirotnik (information and decision sciences) discussed the health of the region’s economy.
“¡Ya Basta! – Enough is Enough!: Education and Violence in the Context of our Schools, Community Safety, and Law-Enforcement,” will take place Sept. 29 at Cal State San Bernardino.
Ahlam Muhtaseb (communication studies) will participate in a program, “The Nakba and Palestinian Refugees 75 Years On: Why They Still Matter,” on May 17, and Enrique Murillo Jr. (education) was officially sworn in as a member of President Biden’s Advisory Commission on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics.
Sina Bastami (geography and environmental studies) talked about the CSUSB Model UN team, a journal edited by Enrique Murillo Jr. (education) has been updated, and research papers by Justin Schneider (nursing) and Sarah Dunn (kinesiology) have been published.
The event at CSUSB celebrated the legacy of the late labor leader and activist, and featured a keynote address from Ron Estrada, CEO of Washington, D.C.,-based Farmworker Justice, and a presentation by Flor Martinez, founder and president of The Celebration Nation Foundation.
Enrique Murillo Jr. (education) was featured in an El Compás Católico article where he discussed his work, a study on physical activity associated with Parkinson’s disease led by Jacob D. Jones (psychology) was published, and an article on Lúa López (biology) focused on her use of mixed method research.
