What happens to your college plans when everything around you suddenly changes? The award-winning PBS documentary series “The Class” follows six high school students as they navigate their senior year, the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges of pursuing their college dreams.
On Tuesday, Oct. 27, Growing Inland Achievement (GIA) will bring a special screening of the series to Cal State San Bernardino’s Performing Arts Center. A reception begins at 3:30 p.m., followed by the screening at 4 p.m. and a Q&A with members of the cast, filmmakers and GIA and CSUSB leadership. The event is free and open to the public.
Filmed during the 2020-21 school year, the six-part documentary follows students at Deer Valley High School in Antioch, Calif., as they juggle remote learning, family responsibilities, personal setbacks and uncertainty about their futures. Along the way, they find support from Cameron Schmidt-Temple, known as “Mr. Cam,” a first-generation college graduate and college adviser who is determined to help them reach their goals.
Executive produced by Tony- and Grammy Award-winning performer Daveed Diggs, known for “Hamilton,” and directed by award-winning filmmakers Jaye and Adam Fenderson, “The Class” captures the struggles, decisions and defining moments of six students whose plans don't always unfold as expected. At its heart, the series is about pursuing opportunities, finding your way forward and the people who help make it possible.
“We truly believe that a great adviser has the power to change not only an individual’s life but to uplift entire communities,” the Fendersons shared in their directors’ statement.
