The Department of Theatre Arts at Cal State San Bernardino hosted its first Technical Theatre Symposium, which brought together educators, students and industry professionals to spotlight the growing opportunities in technical theatre and design across both stage and screen.

Presented in collaboration with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Arts Connection, The California Arts Project, and The Players of the Pear Garden, the event on Sept. 5 highlighted the essential role of technical theatre as both an economic driver and a creative career pathway for the region’s arts community.

Nearly 100 high school students from 10 schools across San Bernardino County attended the daylong symposium, which featured hands-on workshops, career panels, and creative collaborations. Students explored the behind-the-scenes artistry that makes live performance possible — including set and lighting design, sound engineering, stage management, and costume production.

Teachers participated in a lighting design workshop, while students took part in sessions on scenic art, costume design, and technical production. Alumni from CSUSB’s Department of Theatre Arts shared their professional experiences in design and management, inspiring attendees to see the possibilities in the field.

Students also had the chance to meet representatives from a professional entertainment union, learn about multimedia creation, and take a virtual tour of CSUSB’s new Performing Arts Center — followed by a visit to the Barnes Theatre and Motion Capture Lab.

“Technical theatre is the bridge between imagination and reality,” said Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez, assistant professor of theatre arts. “By giving students direct access to industry expertise, we are helping them envision tangible career paths in a field rich with opportunity.”
