Reneisha Wilkes, EOP Renaissance Scholars Program coordinator, has been named recipient of CSUSB’s Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor Award. Sponsored by Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising (ASUA), the award honors professional academic advisors who go above and beyond in guiding and mentoring students.

Each year, this recognition is given to non-faculty advisors who demonstrate NACADA’s Core Values of Academic Advising: caring, commitment, empowerment, inclusivity, integrity, professionalism and respect.

Wilkes was nominated by students whose submissions emphasized the meaningful impact she has had on their academic journeys and personal growth. The award selection was organized by the ASUA Academic Advising Office and reviewed by a diverse committee of staff, faculty and a student representative.

Wilkes, a seasoned higher education professional with 15 years of experience, has held impactful roles at five colleges and universities. She has been a part of the CSUSB community for nearly nine years and has coordinated the Renaissance Scholars Program under the leadership of Veronica Ramirez Amerson, director of Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), since 2022.

In her role, Wilkes provides holistic academic and personal support to current and former foster youth students at CSUSB. This includes removing barriers to success, maintaining consistent engagement, and enriching students' lives through cultural, leadership and artistic experiences outside of the classroom. Ultimately, Wilkes serves as their advocate and trusted support system throughout their educational journey.

Known for her compassionate approach, Wilkes has created a supportive environment that empowers students to thrive. For Wilkes, one of the most rewarding aspects of her job is seeing her students succeed despite all the odds against them, as well as creating a safe space where they feel seen, supported and empowered to pursue their education and achieve their dreams.

Though honored by the award, Wilkes was quick to credit her colleagues and mentors, such as Ramirez Amerson, for their unwavering support throughout her time at CSUSB, reflecting the team spirit she brings to her work every day.

Wilkes’ recognition as Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor reflects both her professional excellence and commitment to student success. For many students, Wilkes has been more than an advisor — she’s been a lifeline, mentor and constant source of encouragement. Through her compassionate leadership, she has not only helped students navigate college — she has helped them believe in their own potential.

“I just like being someone that they can count on,” said Wilkes. “The deep impact that I feel I'm making is personal to me, because this job is fulfilling. I look forward to coming to school every day to support my students.

“Seeing students walk across the graduation stage, knowing the barriers they've overcome, that reward is so unimaginable,” she said. “I just experienced that this past weekend, seeing my biggest class walk across the stage. It really did warm my heart.”
