Cal State San Bernardino closed its campus Thursday, Oct. 10, because of an anticipated electricity shutdown by Southern California Edison.

All classes were canceled, and all business operations were suspended. Students living in dormitories were advised to use emergency kits, including flashlights. The dining facilities were going to remain open, the university said on its website.

The 24th annual San Manuel Pow Wow has been postponed following the closure of Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, Oct. 10, in advance of anticipated power outages due to Santa Ana winds. Originally scheduled to kick off Friday, the annual celebration of Native American culture could not be moved indoors because of the expected electricity shutdown by Southern California Edison.

Cal State San Bernardino closed on Thursday because of an electricity outage aimed at mitigating the threat of wildfires amid dry, windy conditions in Southern California.

All classes were canceled and business operations suspended for the day on the San Bernardino campus after Southern California Edison ordered the power shutoff, according to the university's website.

The closure won't affect the school's Palm Desert campus, which remains open.

 Update: The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians announced on Thursday, Oct. 10, that the San Manuel 24 Annual Pow Wow scheduled for Friday, Oct. 11 through Sunday, Oct. 13 has been postponed to a later date yet to be determined.

“It is with heavy hearts that we must postpone the San Manuel 24th Annual Pow Wow this weekend due to the closure of Cal State San Bernardino as a result of high winds,” said San Manuel Casino through a statement. …

In San Bernardino, the California State University San Bernardino closed its campus and canceled all classes early in the morning before SCE implemented the PSPS.


Edison initiates planned outages in areas across Southern California, leaving about 13,000 customers without power

Planned power outages due to heightened fire-danger conditions across the Southland on Thursday prompted the closure of the Cal State San Bernardino main campus and several schools in Ventura County, officials said.

In a statement, the Cal State San Bernardino Police Department announced that all classes and businesses operations were suspended for the day at the San Bernardino campus. The Palm Desert Campus remained open.

Southern California Edison shut off power to 12,900 customers in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Ventura and Kern counties on Thursday in an effort to lower wildfire risks amid the high fire danger brought on by the arrival of Santa Ana winds.

The number was an increase from 4,700 the utility company gave Thursday morning. …

Powerful winds whipped throughout Southern California. The strongest gust recorded on Thursday reached 72 miles per hour near CSU San Bernardino. Winds peaked at 65 miles per hour at Pleasants Peak in the hills separating Orange and Riverside counties.

Gusts moved as fast as 35 miles per hour in the western part of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, according to the National Weather Service.

The Fry Fire District went to Sam Bernardino to help out with preventing fires in the San Bernardino area.

Winds over the last couple of days have picked up to around 60 to 70 miles per hour. The city has gone as far as shutting down power to prevent any wildfires. As much as 1.5 million people are without power in southern California, including parts of Los Angeles, Ventura, Kern, Hemet and Coachella Valley, and San Bernardino.

Officials say even Cal State San Bernardino shut down Wednesday because of the power outage.

 As the season’s strongest Santa Ana windstorm develops, Southern California Edison says it may cut power to customers in some areas to minimize the chance that arcing power lines will cause a wildfire.

The precautionary outages could affect nearly 63,000 customers in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

All classes at Cal State San Bernardino were cancelled Thursday. The campus at the north end of San Bernardino is situated in one of the region’s worst wind belts.
