In memory of student Jordyn Rivera, who was killed in the mass shooting in Las Vegas on Oct. 1, the Cal State San Bernardino Eta Sigma Gamma National Health Education Honorary Society and students of Health Science 404: Women’s Health will present the second annual Run Like a Mother 5K.

Rivera served as president of the CSUSB Eta Sigma Gamma chapter and was heavily involved in planning the race, said chapter faculty adviser Angie Denisse Verissimo, who is an assistant professor in the university’s Department of Health Sciences and Human Ecology.

“Despite still mourning for the tragic loss of their friend, our students decided to continue with the 5K as scheduled, which will be held in loving memory of Jordyn,” Verissimo said.

The 5K run/walk is to raise money and awareness for the Time for Change and Soul Food for Your Baby Foundations on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 8-11 a.m., by the CSUSB Lower Commons Patio.

Last year, nearly 200 attendees, including CSUSB students, staff, faculty and community members, participated in the event to honor the Time for Change and Soul Food for Your Baby Foundations. Both are local nonprofit community organizations dedicated to improving the lives of women and children by providing resources, programs and services.

“The Annual CSUSB Run Like a Mother 5K is public health in action,” said Verissimo, who is also a faculty coordinator of the 5K. “It is a prime example of bringing community members and our CSUSB community together all while raising consciousness on the pressing concerns that our communities face and celebrating those community organizations that strive to address these concerns.”

She credits the students’ dedication to the groundwork of the event.

“Our students work incredibly hard to plan and implement this event and their work is evident in the large turnout,” said Verissimo.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m. and the run/walk will begin promptly at 8 a.m. Tickets are $10 for the first 100 participants and $15 for the remaining participants. Complimentary parking will be available in parking lot D.
