Students from the Department of Art at Cal State San Bernardino took home 31 ADDY Awards, including three gold awards, from the American Advertising Federation Inland Empire Chapter’s Awards Gala — the most this year by any one school in the student competition.

“The student competition was the 13th largest student advertising competition in the nation, with 109 entries from seven colleges or universities,” the AAF Inland Chapter said. CSUSB’s 31 awards was followed by The Art Institute of California–Inland Empire with 29 awards; California Baptist University, 14 awards; Mt. San Antonio College, nine awards; Platt College, five; and the University of Redlands, one.

“Each year we are so proud of the work our students produce, and the Addy Awards provide an excellent venue to showcase their pieces,” said Andrew Oakes, assistant professor of graphic design at CSUSB. “It's rare that students are able get their work in front of the region’s most influential industry professionals, and this event is a perfect opportunity. We were especially fortunate this year to bring home a fair number of awards. It is a testament to the hard work of our students and their professors.”

The awards gala took place on March 9 at the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa in Riverside. The annual event recognizes and honors the top advertising work, in professional and student competitions, created in the Inland Empire counties of San Bernardino and Riverside during 2017.

The American Advertising Awards Inland Empire Competition is part of the national American Advertising Awards, the world’s largest advertising competition with about 40,000 professional entries in almost 200 local competitions and about 5,000 student entries.

Winners in the local competitions move on to compete in one of 15 district competitions for the right to make it to the national finals. Both the professional and student gold winners in the Inland Empire will move on to compete against the professional and student gold winners in the American Advertising Awards District 15 competition against the winners from the Los Angeles, Orange County, Palm Springs, San Diego, Las Vegas and Coastal California (San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura counties) competitions.
