The Department of Theatre Arts at Cal State San Bernardino presents “The Paper Bag Princess and Other Stories” by Robert Munsch, a traveling collection of family-friendly, imaginative stories, on Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Ronald E. Barnes Theatre. The first show will begin at 11 a.m. and the second at 2 p.m. The play will feature puppets and simple theater magic to inspire the love of reading for kids of all ages. The show is free for children. Adult tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the theatre arts website. When Munsch worked at a childcare center in the 1970s, he said he would share lots of fairytale stories that would always end with the prince saving the princess from a dragon. When his wife questioned why the prince is never saved in his stories, Munsch decided to change the ending of “The Paper Bag Princess” where Princess Elizabeth rescues Prince Ronald. However, Ronald is ungrateful, prompting Elizabeth to call him a “bum” (or “toad” in some editions) and dance off into the sunset without him. When it was first published, “The Paper Bag Princess” sold 3,000 copies. It has since sold 3 million. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the CSUSB Theatre Box Office at (909) 537-5884 or visit the online box office.
