October 13, 2015

Dear Colleagues,

We would appreciate your feedback on the draft of the strategic planning implementation plan and its budget estimates (see documents below).

BackgroundYou may recall that at the CSUSB Strategic Plan Town Hall meeting in May (2015) SPAC presented the final draft of the Plan to the members of the campus community and local communities. SPAC collected responses and reviewed them and, where appropriate, made improvements to the strategic plan. Following the collegial model, CSUSB now is developing budget estimates to meet our goals and objectives.

Developing Strategic Plan Budget EstimatesPhase 1. Following up on the May 2015 Town Hall meeting, beginning in July and continuing through mid-August (2015) the SPAC Co-chairs met with campus leaders whose knowledge and expertise closely matched with goals, objectives, and strategies of the strategic plan. The purpose of the meetings was to establish our initial cost estimates associated with each goal, objective, and strategy of the plan. Phase 2. The estimates obtained were vetted with members of the central administrative leadership and academic leaders. Their feedback was reviewed and budget revisions occurred. Phase 3. On two separate occasions in September the Strategic Plan budget estimates were presented at the University Budget Advisory Committee (UBAC) meetings. Responses from the meetings were considered and resulted in further refinements of the proposed budget.

Next stepsWe are now presenting the budget estimates to the campus community. Due to constraints of time and inability to have an open forum about the budget estimates, we are asking your feedback via this email. Please take some time and review the estimated budget associated with the strategic planning implementation plan, and comment accordingly to the survey (linked below) by 5:00 p.m. Thursday 22 October 2015. The survey has two purposes. Our first purpose is to obtain your thoughts about the proposed strategic plan budget allocation. Second, we want to know who you believe are the campus divisions, departments or units who should have the responsibility of implementing the goals, objectives and strategies given the budget estimates. CSUSB will have a leadership retreat on Thursday 29 October 2015 where we will ask colleagues to review effective ways to implement key elements of the strategic plan.

And finally . . .Following the retreat, CSUSB will review comments from the meeting along with results from the survey and prepare a final report to WASC about the Strategic Plan by Thursday 5 November 2015.

In the spirit of collegiality and with kind regards,

Vice President of ITS Sam Sudhakar & Terry L. RizzoSPAC Implementation Co-Chairs

Dear Campus Community,

Please see this week's strategic planning process updates below:

The Strategic Planning Campus Forum was held on Wednesday this week. It was well attended with well over 70 colleagues attending at the San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses and accessing the live web stream. SPAC and the Working Groups received meaningful feedback that will be considered as we continue through our process. If you missed the Forum, you can find our draft objectives and a video of the Forum here. You can also provide feedback by using our ongoing survey or by contacting any SPAC member.

SPAC met on Thursday to discuss Campus Forum feedback, Working Groups' progress to date and suggested revisions to our draft Plan. SPAC has made the following edits:

  • Draft Vision Statement:CSUSB aspires to be a model for transforming lives.
  • Draft Mission Statement:CSUSB ensures student learning and success, conducts research, scholarly and creative activities, and is actively engaged in the vitality of our region. We cultivate the professional, ethical, and intellectual development of our students, faculty and staff so they thrive and contribute to a globally connected society.

Although we did not revise our draft Core Values, we made edits to the Core Value definitions:

  • INCLUSIVITY and DIVERSITYWe value differences among students, faculty and staff. Diversity and inclusivity that is broad and deep makes us a healthier and more productive university and builds a culture that fosters engagement and diverse perspectives.
  • INNOVATIONWe support and believe in an innovative culture and attitude that fosters the creative and deliberate application of teaching, research, scholarship and service for effective education.
  • INTEGRITYWe affirm and are committed to the truth. We demonstrate our integrity by being ethical, matching what we say with what we do, and by ultimately taking responsibility for our actions.
  • RESPECTWe believe in and are committed to the virtue of respect and treat everyone with courtesy and kindness.
  • SOCIAL JUSTICE and EQUITYWe believe in, affirm, and are committed to the equal value and dignity of all people.  Fairness and equity are more than equality.  We actively seek to eliminate barriers for those who are disadvantaged and disempowered so they may participate fully in university life.
  • SUSTAINABILITYWe affirm and are committed to the sustainability of our university by forward thinking, learning from both successes and mistakes, being proactive in moving our university forward, and by providing opportunities for continued growth and development.
  • TRANSPARENCYWe affirm and are committed to the importance of transparency both internally and externally.  We believe in honesty and openness in our decisions and processes, subject to legal and ethical confidentialities. Understanding we are a public institution, we are also upfront and open to the community and residents that we serve about the decisions we make and the actions we take.
  • WELLNESS and SAFETYWe affirm and are committed to protecting and enhancing the health, wellness and safety of ourselves, our colleagues, our students and our stakeholders.   We believe a healthy university is one in which there is collegial collaboration and uses continuous improvement processes that ensures a safe and healthy workplace for all.

Today marked the fourth meeting of the Strategic Planning Working Groups, who continue to make good progress on their draft objectives. Our consultant, President Emerita Jolene Koester, was on hand to work individually with the Groups.
