What to expect during your appointment:
The Speaking Center at JHBC looks forward to working with you! We welcome all students (both undergraduates and graduates) from all disciplines. We offer appointments via online (Zoom) modality or face-to-face (JB-230). When you meet with the Center’s trained communication consultants, here is what you can expect:
- A 45-minute appointment will include about 35-40 minutes of consultation time with a few minutes for an introduction and 5 minutes at the end to wrap up the appointment. If you need more time, please feel free to schedule two back-to-back appointments.
- Answer any questions you may have regarding public speaking. This includes questions about your speech assignment, oral presentation apprehension, and/or speech organization.
- Immediate constructive feedback (this mean positive notes and points of growth) on presentation delivery, transitions, pauses, organization, and more.
- Assistance with team/group presentation delivery and provide individual feedback for each member.
- Guidelines for speech organization, preparation, delivery, public speaking anxiety, and more.
- If you book an online appointment, a Zoom link will be emailed to you through our reservation system (WConline) in both your confirmation email and 24-hour reminder email.
- For online appointments, we will record the Zoom meeting. After your appointment, we will email you a copy of your video recording for future reference.
The Speaking Center communication consultants are available to help you with all your presentation and public speaking questions and concerns.

Online via Zoom Appointment
- Once you have made an appointment, you will receive an email confirmation with a Zoom link. Please make sure to take note of who your appointment is with so that you open the correct Zoom link when the time arrives.
- Log in on Zoom on-time for your appointment. Note: your consultant will be on the Zoom link for 15 minutes until you arrive anytime after this timeframe your appointment will be marked as a “No-Show”.
- If you have technological issues or questions, please email us at speaking.jhbc@csusb.edu
What students can expect from a consultation…
- Communication consultants to assist you in refining your speech delivery.
- Written or verbal feedback about your speaking skills, with helpful resources such as our TIPS to address questions and support your success as a speaker.
- Communication consultants to focus solely on you and provide guidance in the speech preparation process for the full duration of your appointment.
What students should not expect…
- Communication consultants to create your speech for you.
- Receiving a feedback evaluation form signed by a consultant for your class. Rather, your instructor will get a record of your attendance at the end of the term.
- Communication consultants to tell you exactly how to do your speech. Consultants are there to guide and help you make your presentation your own.
