Research and Teaching Interests

Adam Hungate received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside, with a primary field of Native American history, a complementary field of Cold War history, and a teaching field of US history.  His research has studied the experiences of the Diné (Navajo) people with uranium and its effects on their people and lands.  The research looked into the collusion between the US government and mining companies to secure uranium for the Manhattan Project at any cost- and with such large deposits located on Diné lands, it led to a violation of the trust relationship between a Federally Recognized Tribe and the United States.  Mining companies and the US government kept the dangers of radiation from the miners, who began to develop extensive health problems.  Instead of treating the problems, the Public Health Service covered it up and conducted a human radiation experiment over a period of twenty years.  Dr. Hungate's research showed how the Diné took control of their environment, repairing their land, and educating their people about the health effects of the uranium industry.
