Please join us for a presentation with Dr. Angelina Chin of Pomona College, History. Her presentation, which is part of the CSUSB Disability Studies Lecture series, will be titled, "Labor, Colonial Welfare, and Disability: Blind Factory Workers in Hong Kong."
In this presentation, Angelina Chin will look at the labor movements spanning several decades within Hong Kong's Blind Factory, probing the intersections of labor and disability, and posing profound inquiries regarding society's obligations towards its disabled citizens, deliberating the critical decision between prioritizing social welfare or fostering employment opportunities and the resultant consequences on the identities and agency of individuals with disabilities, thereby offering invaluable insights into the realms of disability rights, social welfare policies, and employment dynamics; and despite its deep roots in the context of Hong Kong, this study transcends geographical boundaries by addressing universal questions concerning labor rights and justice for marginalized communities, rendering it profoundly relevant well beyond its specific setting.
