
Barbara Sirotnik (information and decision sciences) discussed the latest Purchasing Managers Index and the region’s economy, and Brian Levin (criminal justice, emeritus) was interviewed about the increasing incidents of antisemitism.

Terrance L. Stone is a national- and state-certified gang intervention and prevention specialist who has reached more than 185,000 at-risk youth through Young Visionaries Youth Leadership Academy, of which Stone is the founder and CEO.

Chicana painter, sculptor and printmaker Linda Vallejo will be in conversation with Laura Augusta, curator at the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts at the University of Texas, El Paso, to discuss Vallejo’s recent work “Brown Baroque: Objects of Opulence” on Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.

The university is a 2023 Equity Champion of Higher Education for Black Students, one of five California State Universities that are being honored “for working with intentionality to support Black students via the Associate Degree for Transfer” by the Campaign for College Opportunity.

The award criteria required that an individual or group employs curiosity and courage in their work; they know bold, innovative thinking is necessary to identify greater systems efficiency and solve longstanding regional challenges.

Brian Levin (criminal justice, emeritus) was interviewed about increasing hate incidents targeting the Latino community (the segment also featured the Raza Database Project housed at CSUSB’s Latino Education and Advocacy Days project), and in a separate news segment, about the increase in hate incidents directed at Muslims and Jews.

Gustavo Marin, who earned a Master of Business Administration, shares how higher education can be possible for anyone with hard work and dedication.

Jonathan Dubois (anthropology) was interviewed about the symbolism of the hawk and the “evil eye,” Brian Levin (criminal justice, emeritus) discussed increasing hate crimes in the U.S. related to the escalating fighting between Hamas and Israel, and Nicolas M. Brunet (psychology) recently published a study that “explores early Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) sensitivity to facial stimuli.”

Mary Jane McCoy, BA, history, ’67, who was one of three African American students in the first graduating class of 59 students, is being recognized for her decades of dedicated leadership, service and generosity to the educational community and beyond.

One of the highlights of the month includes a closing ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 29, featuring state Assemblymember James Ramos, D-Highland, bird singers and words of wisdom from CSUSB Indigenous leaders.

Cal State San Bernardino’s Homecoming Week ended with the Homecoming Bash on Oct. 28 that featured games, entertainment, food, a volleyball game and the chance to connect – and reconnect – with fellow Coyotes, family and friends.
