Socktober has officially begun at the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, and the Coyote Nursing Students of the Desert are asking the campus community to help fill collection baskets with new socks and new or gently used shoes.

The drive runs through Oct. 31 and is open to everyone. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to participate.

Donations may be dropped off in collection baskets located at the Palm Desert Campus:

  • Mary Stuart Rogers Gateway Building lobby
  • Palm Desert Health Sciences Building, Room 120

Participants may also purchase items through the Socktober Amazon Wishlist.

Those who donate directly to a collection basket are asked to record their contribution on the sign-in sheet so all donations can be accurately tracked.

Socks and shoes donated through the drive will be distributed through the CSUSB Nursing Street Medicine Program at the Palm Desert Campus, which serves unhoused individuals and other vulnerable populations throughout the Coachella Valley. The program provides street-based clinics, foot soaks, hygiene supplies, clothing and shoes, as well as vital sign assessments, blood glucose testing, wound care, health education, medication management, referrals and behavioral health and substance-use assessments.

Shoes are especially important for individuals experiencing homelessness, who may walk an average of eight to 10 miles each day. Through Socktober, the Coyote Nursing Students of the Desert hope to help provide comfort, protection and support — one pair at a time.
