Cal State San Bernardino will welcome marine biologist, author and science advocate Jasmin Graham for a special book talk as part of the Gerald M. Scherba Lecture Series, presented by the College of Natural Sciences and co-sponsored by CSUSB Libraries, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Office of Black Student Success.
The event, free and open to the public, will be held on Feb. 11 from noon-1 p.m. in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences building, room SB-128.
Graham is the author of “Sharks Don’t Sink: Adventures of a Rogue Shark Scientist,” a memoir that blends marine science with personal storytelling to explore resilience, representation and the realities of life as a field scientist.
“When I read Ms. Graham’s book, I grew excited about sharing the path she forged with our students,” said Rebecca Lubas, dean of the CSUSB Libraries. “She proved that you can love science and do it your own way.”
Graham’s research focuses on smalltooth sawfish and hammerhead sharks, and she is widely recognized for her efforts to expand access and inclusion within marine science.
In addition to her research, Graham is the co-founder of Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS), an organization dedicated to supporting and amplifying underrepresented voices in shark research and conservation. She also hosts the PBS series “Sharks Unknown with Jasmin Graham,” which highlights lesser-known shark species and the scientists who study them.
The discussion will be facilitated by Joseph Heras, associate professor of biology, and include a question-and-answer session.
“We’re honored to have Jasmin present at our university,” said Heras. “Her work as co-founder of MISS has already engaged several of our students, and her visit provides an invaluable opportunity for them to connect with a leader shaping the field.”
Prior to the lecture, a book giveaway and signing will be held from 11-11:45 a.m. on the first floor of the university’s John M. Pfau Library. Fifty complimentary copies of Graham’s book will be available.
The Gerald M. Scherba Lecture Series highlights the natural sciences and their impact on the world, while honoring the legacy of founding faculty member Gerald Scherba, the university’s first science professor, hired in 1962.
