Ten years after tragedy forever changed the San Bernardino community, Cal State San Bernardino continues to honor the lives lost, the resilience that followed, and the unity that endures.
CSUSB’s College of Natural Sciences will host the annual Day of Remembrance on Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 3-5 p.m. in the Peace Garden, located on the south side of the Chemical Sciences building. The ceremony will commemorate the 14 individuals who lost their lives during the 2015 mass shooting in San Bernardino — including five CSUSB alumni from the Department of Biology and the Department of Health Science and Human Ecology.
As part of the ceremony, the garden’s bell will be rung 14 times to honor each victim.
The university will pay tribute to its alumni:
- Robert Adams, public health education, 2011
- Juan Espinoza, biology, 2002
- Shannon Johnson, environmental health science, 2004
- Yvette Velasco, environmental health science, 2013
- Michael Wetzel, biology, 2001
Created in their memory, the Peace Garden stands as a living symbol of healing and remembrance. The space features a five-sided pedestal topped with a bronze bell, and plaques bearing the names and degrees of each alumnus.
Also to be honored at the ceremony are Isaac Amanios, Bennett Bet-Badal, Harry Bowman, Sierra Clayborn, Aurora Godoy, Larry Daniel Kaufman, Damien Meins, Tin Nguyen and Nicholas Thalasinos.
All 14 individuals were at the Inland Regional Center; all except for Kaufman were employees of the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health who were attending a training and holiday gathering at the Inland Regional Center when the tragedy occurred.
The Day of Remembrance unites the CSUSB and San Bernardino communities in reflection, healing and hope. As the university marks the 10th anniversary, CSUSB reaffirms its commitment to remembrance, resilience and unity — ensuring the legacy of those lost on Dec. 2, 2015, will never be forgotten.
