Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus will both pay tribute to fallen service members during Memorial Day ceremonies, with CSUSB’s event on Wednesday, May 23, and PDC’s on Thursday, May 24.

CSUSB’s ceremony, which is hosted by its Veterans Success Center and Student Veterans Organization, will begin at 9 a.m., on the John M. Pfau Library lawn, featuring the singing of the national anthem, flag-folding ceremony, 21-gun salute, and keynote speaker, retired U.S. Air Force CMSgt. Hugh E. Wagner.

The day will continue with a Memorial Day Community Service event at the Riverside National Cemetery, Overhead B location, from noon until 3:15 p.m. A charter bus and lunch will be provided for the first 50 participants — pre-registration required. The bus will arrive at the main entrance of University Parkway, in front of the CSUSB flagpoles, at 11:30 a.m. To register, call the Veterans Success Center at (909) 537-5195.

The PDC Memorial Day ceremony, which is hosted by the PDC Veterans Success Center, will begin with welcoming remarks by Sharon Brown-Welty, dean of the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, on the front patio of the campus’ Palm Desert Health Sciences Building at 3 p.m.

Following the remarks, the event will feature a presentation of the colors, “The Star Spangled Banner” performed by the Rancho Mirage High School Chamber Choir, a keynote address, a Moment of Reflection, a flag-folding ceremony and a three-volley salute by the local VFW Post 6476 Honor Detail. Joel Daniels, a retired United States Marine Corps gunnery sergeant, will play “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes.

Refreshments will be served following the ceremony and tours of the campus’ Veterans Success Center will be offered.
