Pacific Surfliner Train & San Diego - SBC

Choose Your Travel Option

When registering, you must choose one of two travel options:

• Option 1: Morning Train — Ride the train from Los Angeles to San Diego and return to CSUSB by van.
• Option 2: Afternoon Train — Travel to San Diego by van and ride the train from San Diego to Los Angeles.

Each participant will ride the train one way only—not both ways. You will travel by van for the other direction. Both options include visits to Old Town San Diego and Balboa Park.

Option 1: Morning Train to San Diego

Van: CSUSB → Los Angeles
Train: Los Angeles → San Diego
Van: San Diego → CSUSB

We will depart CSUSB by van and travel to Los Angeles Union Station, the historic heart of Southern California rail travel. From there, we will board the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner for a scenic morning ride south to Old Town San Diego, passing beach cities, wetlands, and stretches of ocean along the way.

After arriving at the Old Town Transit Center, explore “the birthplace of California.” Walk through the preserved buildings of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, browse artisan shops, and enjoy lunch at a local Mexican restaurant or marketplace.

Next, we will travel by van to Balboa Park, San Diego’s cultural centerpiece. Spend the afternoon strolling through gardens and iconic Spanish Colonial architecture, taking photos at landmarks such as the Botanical Building and Lily Pond, and visiting museums or outdoor exhibits as time allows.

At the end of the day, we will regroup at Balboa Park and return to CSUSB by van.

Option 2: Afternoon Train from San Diego

Van: CSUSB → San Diego
Train: San Diego → Los Angeles
Van: Los Angeles → CSUSB

We will depart CSUSB by van and travel directly to Balboa Park, San Diego’s cultural centerpiece. Spend the morning exploring its gardens and iconic Spanish Colonial architecture, stopping for photos at landmarks such as the Botanical Building and Lily Pond, and visiting museums or outdoor exhibits as time allows.

Next, we will travel by van to Old Town San Diego, known as “the birthplace of California.” Explore the preserved buildings of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, browse artisan shops, and enjoy lunch at a local Mexican restaurant or marketplace.

After exploring Old Town, we will board the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner at the Old Town Transit Center for a scenic afternoon ride north to Los Angeles Union Station, passing beach cities, wetlands, and stretches of ocean along the way.

After arriving at Union Station, we will return to CSUSB by van.
