Mr. Alexandr Kurilin will be our guest lecturer at the CSE department for the class CSE 4550 (Software Engineering) on November 24, 2021 (Wednesday 11:45 – 1:00 pm). Alex has over 10 years of experience in technology development and has driven various software engineering projects throughout their life cycles including the successful acquisition of a San Francisco based education technology company (Freckle at Renaissance). Through this guest lecture, Alex will highlight several valuable practices for successfully entering and thriving in the industry for students as well as discovering the sources for career opportunities.
The guest lecture will focus on the following topics:
1. Real-world software engineering: differences between startups and big corporations in terms of the workload and expectations for personal growth.
2. Technical and soft skills to stand out for successful roles at various levels. Running startups and being part of a fast-paced corporate environment from Alex's personal experience
3. Individual contributor (IC) vs the Manager. Roles and responsibilities of the IC and the manager in small to large environments
4. Job applications, interviews, and career planning
