MA & MFA applicants can apply now for Fall semester entry: CalState/Apply

APPLICATION DEADLINES: 

March 1st (priority for Fall entry)


APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

In Cal State Apply, you will choose CSU San Bernardino, then create an account, enter your personal contact details, and then choose the MA in Art or the MFA in Studio Art. There is a standard application fee of $70.

Once your account is created you will be able to enter and upload more detailed information. These elements include:

Personal Statement (required): A three- to four-page typed "Statement of Purpose" describing the conceptual and technical aspects of your artwork and your reason for seeking graduate studies in art. This statement should also demonstrate your knowledge of historical and contemporary art in relation to your work. This statement should be carefully crafted and will be used to evaluate your writing ability and critical thinking skills, as well as what stage you are at with your art practice.

Portfolio (required): A portfolio displaying a comprehensive cohesive body of art work with strong technical abilities and potential for a clear direction in graduate study. A portfolio consists of 15–20 images of your artworks in the form of jpegs or pdf. The portfolio needs to be accompanied by a typed list of all the artworks' details with your name, the title of each work, medium, size, and date for each artwork.

Unofficial Transcripts (required): To expedite your graduate application, you must submit the following unofficial transcripts (if applicable):

  • An unofficial transcript from the undergraduate institution where your bachelor’s degree was earned (required)
  • Unofficial transcript(s) from any institution(s) where the coursework counted toward your bachelor’s degree
  • Unofficial transcript(s) for all post-baccalaureate coursework
  • An unofficial transcript from the last college or university you attended


Reference Letters (optional): You may submit the names and contact details of up to three former professors or arts professionals with whom you have worked or are currently working. Once submitted these individuals will be automatically sent requests for their letter of recommendation/support for you application.

You can upload a total of 15 MB per document. Please notice that in the Cal State Apply system it states that some of the above are optional; they are not, they are all required.

The studio art faculty review the applications and a shortlist of applicants will be called for interviews. Interviews are typically undertaken by ZOOM video conferencing. From these interviews a maximum of five applicants will be chosen to enter the MFA in Studio Art each year, and up to five applicants will be chosen to enter the MA in Art.
