TRIO Upward Bound Summer University 2026 Builds Community, Leadership, and College Readiness
California State University, San Bernardino's (CSUSB) TRIO Upward Bound program welcomed students to its signature Summer University program, an immersive pre-college experience that prepares first-generation, college-bound high school students for success in higher education. Through rigorous academics, leadership development, and campus life experiences, participants strengthen their skills, build community, and gain confidence as they
prepare for college.
The 2026 Summer University theme, Building Community, reflects the program's commitment to fostering belonging, leadership, and academic excellence. Through rigorous coursework, leadership development, college- and career-readiness workshops, and enrichment activities, students develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive in high school, college, and beyond.
The summer begins with the selection of the Link Crew Leadership Peer Mentors, a cohort of 15 upper-level Upward Bound students who complete intensive leadership training in mentorship, communication, teamwork, and community engagement. Throughout Summer University and the academic year, these student leaders serve as role models, encouraging participation, supporting academic achievement, and creating an inclusive environment where every participant feels welcomed.
Running from early June through late July, Summer University combines a commuter instructional program with an on-campus residential experience. Students complete coursework in English Literature, Mathematics, Science, and Tagalog, with instruction aligned to California Common Core State Standards and enriched through hands-on, collaborative learning that promotes critical thinking and real-world application.
Beyond the classroom, participants attend college- and career-readiness seminars covering college admissions, financial aid and scholarships, career exploration, leadership development, study strategies, and personal growth. Additional programming focuses on communication, wellness, social-emotional learning, and team building, reinforcing the program's communitycentered approach.
For many students, Summer University is more than an academic program, it's a place to grow personally and build meaningful relationships.
"Summer University positively impacts me because it helps me stick to a schedule and helps me to still learn while still having fun and engaging in new fun activities," said Jazelle Castro, an 11th-grade student at Eisenhower High School.
For Max Talamantes, a 12th-grade student at Pacific High School, Summer University has been an opportunity to step outside his comfort zone, build new friendships, and grow both personally and academically.
"Summer University has greatly impacted me by pushing me to try and make new friendships by doing activities with others and also learning in the process," Talamantes said.
A highlight of the program is the residential experience, where students live in CSUSB residence halls, dine on campus, attend classes, and participate in evening activities that introduce them to the academic and social aspects of university life. This immersive environment helps students develop independence, responsibility, and confidence while experiencing college firsthand.
Students interested in science also have the opportunity to participate in the STEM Academy, offered in partnership with the CSUSB Department of Biology. Through hands-on laboratory experiences in developmental biology and stem cell research, participants gain exposure to advanced scientific concepts and careers. The academy also includes a visit to the San Bernardino County Health Laboratory, where students learn how STEM education translates into careers in public health and scientific research.
For Brian Höehn, a member of the Upward Bound staff, the program's greatest success is the lasting impact it has on students long after Summer University ends.
"By providing first-generation, college-bound high school students with tutoring, summer programs, and application assistance, Upward Bound fundamentally shifts the dream of 'maybe one day' into the reality of 'I'm accepted,'" Höehn said. "From academic tutoring to personal finance and financial aid guidance, the program provides motivated students with a clear and stable pathway toward earning a bachelor's degree. Simply put, Upward Bound changes lives and empowers students' futures."
Through Summer University 2026, TRIO Upward Bound continues to prepare first-generation, college-bound students for success by strengthening their academic foundation, developing leadership skills, and providing meaningful opportunities to explore future educational and career pathways. Grounded in this year's theme, Building Community, the program fosters a supportive environment where participants gain confidence, form lasting connections, and experience college life firsthand. By combining rigorous academics, mentorship, and immersive campus experiences, Summer University empowers students to pursue higher education with purpose and confidence while preparing them to succeed in high school, college, and beyond.
