Cal-SOAP CSUSB Summer Camps Empower the Next Generation of Innovators and Tech Leaders

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - This summer, nearly 75 high school students from across the Inland Empire stepped into the world of innovation, leadership, and tech at two immersive residential programs hosted by Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB). In collaboration with the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) and CSUSB’s Office of Pre-College Programs, the UpStarters Discovery Camp and WITHCyber (GenCyber) experience brought learning to life through hands-on workshops, dynamic evening events, and a deep dive into college life. For many students, it was a week of firsts: living in dorms, eating in dining halls, building business plans, coding their own devices, and gaining insight into future careers. But most importantly, it was a week of connection, confidence, and discovery.
UpStarters Discovery Camp: Turning Passion into Purpose
Rising seniors stepped into the world of entrepreneurship at UpStarters Discovery Camp, hosted in partnership with CSUSB’s School of Entrepreneurship and the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship. Students developed personal brands, built business plans, and pitched their ideas to local entrepreneurs during a celebratory closing mixer. Alongside entrepreneurial training, participants gained valuable insights into college life, living in dorms, enjoying meals on campus, and attending college readiness workshops on admissions, financial aid, and personal statements. With one-on-one mentorship throughout, students left equipped to turn their passions into purpose. “By the end of the week, students walked away with new skills, a support network, and a sense of purpose,” said Cuevas-Zaragoza.
WITHCyber (GenCyber): Building the Next Generation of Cyber Defenders
Meanwhile, students in the WITHCyber (GenCyber) camp dove headfirst into the world of cybersecurity and tech. Hosted by CSUSB’s Center for Cyber and AI, WITHCyber Summer Camp offered everything from hands-on coding and device building to mock cyberattack simulations that put students’ skills to the test.
Highlights included:
• Cyber Escape Rooms and NICE Challenge Labs
• A High-Altitude Ropes Course that builds teamwork and resilience
• A Career Mentorship Power Hour featuring one-on-one chats with industry professionals
“Students were fully engaged, asking thoughtful questions, diving into tech projects, and staying curious long after the day ended,” said Carina Cuevas-Zaragoza. “Their energy was contagious. They tackled a challenging coding activity focused on defending against hacks, and it was clearhow invested they were. What really stood out to me was their consistent excitement. Every single day, they showed up eager to learn, and not a single student ever complained about the class. They couldn't wait to get to their sessions and were just as enthusiastic to continue into the evenings.”
The residential experience played a vital role in the success of this year’s summer programs, offering students the chance not only to learn but also to live and grow together. From dorm life to shared meals and evening adventures, the experience built strong bonds and lasting memories. “It was a week full of learning, laughter, and meaningful connections—an experience both students and staff will cherish for years,” reflected Erica Gutierrez, Cal-SOAP Project Specialist and planning committee member. Although Erica and fellow Project Specialist Carina Cuevas-Zaragoza didn’t lead the daytime workshops, they brought the magic to the evenings, planning fun-filled activities that helped students relax and connect.
The week kicked off with a glow-in-the-dark scavenger hunt, igniting teamwork and laughter across campus. A relaxed outdoor movie night featuring The Minecraft Movie, complete with popcorn and cotton candy, gave students a chance to unwind. Midweek brought high energy with a night of cosmic bowling, arcade games, painting, pizza, and wings, while a spirited pool party closed out the week with music, water games, and plenty of popsicles to beat the summer heat. While many students arrived already knowing a few familiar faces, the residential aspect encouraged deeper connections and sparked new friendships beyond their usual circles. Watching students step out of their comfort zones, interacting with peers, and forming genuine bonds was one of the week’s most rewarding outcomes.
“The evening moments truly became the heart of the experience,” Gutierrez shared. The heart of this summer’s success lay in the exceptional work of our coaching team. This year’s group brought together a dynamic mix of seasoned mentors and enthusiastic first-time leaders, each contributing energy, compassion, and a deep commitment to student growth. “Our coaches made sure every student felt seen, supported, and celebrated,” said Project Specialist Erica Gutierrez. “That’s what made the week so special.” Their influence was especially powerful in the UpStarters Discovery Camp, where they helped create a nurturing and inclusive environment. Through encouragement and hands-on guidance, coaches empowered students to build confidence, take creative risks, and work collaboratively across diverse groups.
As the summer programs wrapped up, participants walked away with new skills, expanded professional networks, and memories that will last a lifetime. Whether they were pitching innovative business ideas, defending cyber systems, enjoying evening activities, or growingpersonally, CSUSB’s Office of Pre-College Programs summer camps offered more than just education; they served as vibrant launchpads for tomorrow’s leaders, innovators, and trailblazers. “The students truly enjoyed both programs,” shared Carina Cuevas-Zaragoza. “They gained valuable skills, built meaningful friendships, and left inspired to step into leadership roles.” These camps went beyond the traditional classroom, sparking passion and equipping students with the confidence and tools they need to thrive in college and beyond.
