World Affairs Council of the Desert

Student Armando Bolaños and history professor Michael Karp attended the World Affairs Councils of America National Conference, which took place on Nov. 17-19 and brought together prominent political leaders, leading journalists, intellectuals and diplomats to discuss our nation’s most pressing issues.

Brian Levin (criminal justice) was part of a panel of experts interviewed about the increase in hate incidents targeting Asian Americans, and Michael Karp (history) coordinated and hosted the 16th annual Academic WorldQuest competition held virtually on March 4.

The competition is usually hosted by Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus in the Indian Wells Theater, but arrangements were made to hold WorldQuest virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Palm Desert High School won its fourth consecutive Academic WorldQuest competition, which took place at the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus. The winners advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C., in April.

The 13th annual Academic WorldQuest Competition, which tests teams of high school students’ knowledge of international affairs, will take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus’ Indian Wells Theater.

The Palm Desert High School team scored 44 out of 50, just shy of its 46 out of 50 winning score from last year, which was the highest score in the history of this local competition.
