Two-time alumnus Matthew Markin, an academic advisor in the Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising Office (ASUA), is the recipient of CSUSB’s 2026 Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor Award.
The award recognizes non-faculty advisors who exemplify NACADA’s Core Values of Academic Advising: caring, commitment, empowerment, inclusivity, integrity, professionalism and respect. Sponsored by ASUA, the recognition honors advisors who go above and beyond in supporting student success.
“I am deeply honored by this recognition, especially knowing that this was based on student voices,” said Markin. “As an advisor, my priority is making sure students feel valued, supported, and seen. For me, this award shows that advising is not about picking classes; it’s about building positive relationships, helping students navigate their college journeys, and achieving their goals. I dedicate this award to all of my students.”
Markin was nominated by students who highlighted the positive role he has played in their educational journeys.
“Throughout my four years of college, my advisor has been one of the most constant and meaningful influences in my academic journey,” one student shared in their nomination. “From the very beginning, he has done nothing but give his best by guidance, encouragement and support during moments when I needed it most.”
Another student wrote, “Advisors play an important role in shaping students’ academic journeys, and my advisor consistently goes above and beyond to support and guide students. His dedication, kindness and commitment to student success make him truly deserving of this recognition.”
The award selection process was organized by the Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising Office and reviewed by a committee composed of CSUSB administrators, staff, faculty and students.
Markin has worked at CSUSB for more than 20 years. He previously served as an admissions counselor before becoming an academic advisor in 2013.
Through his dedication to mentoring and guiding students, Markin continues to make a lasting impact on the CSUSB community and the success of its students.
