This summer, approximately 75 high school students from across the Inland Empire participated in two immersive, residential programs at Cal State San Bernardino focused on innovation, leadership and technology. Hosted in collaboration with CSUSB’s California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) and Office of Pre-College Programs, the UpStarters Discovery Camp and WITH (Workforce Innovation Technology Hubs) Cyber Camp brought learning to life through hands-on workshops, dynamic evening events and a deep dive into college life.
Cal-SOAP and the Office of Pre-College Programs provided the residential experience for the students at the camps, along with evening activities, such as games, movie nights and team-building exercises. For many students, it was a week of firsts: living in dorms, eating in dining halls, building business plans, coding their own devices, and gaining insight into future careers. Most importantly, it was a week of connection, confidence and discovery.
Rising seniors stepped into the world of entrepreneurship at UpStarters Discovery Camp. Hosted by CSUSB’s Randall W. Lewis School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the Randall W. Lewis Center for Entrepreneurship, students developed personal brands, built business plans and pitched their ideas to local entrepreneurs during a celebratory closing mixer.
Alongside entrepreneurial training, participants gained valuable insights into college life, living in dorms, enjoying meals on campus and attending college readiness workshops on admissions, financial aid and personal statements. With one-on-one mentorship throughout, students left equipped to turn their passions into purpose.
“By the end of the week, students walked away with new skills, a support network and a sense of purpose,” said Carina Cuevas-Zaragoza, Cal-SOAP project specialist.
Students in the WITH Cyber Camp dove headfirst into the world of cybersecurity and tech. Hosted by CSUSB’s Center for Cyber and AI, the WITH Cyber Camp offered everything from hands-on coding and device building to mock cyberattack simulations that put students’ skills to the test.
The residential experience played a vital role in the success of this year’s summer programs, held June 9-12, offering students the chance to not only learn but to live and grow together. From dorm life to shared meals and evening adventures, the experience built strong bonds and lasting memories.
“It was a week full of learning, laughter and meaningful connections — an experience both students and staff will cherish for years,” reflected Erica Gutierrez, Cal-SOAP project specialist and planning committee member.
Although Gutierrez and Cuevas-Zaragoza didn’t lead the daytime workshops, they brought the magic to the evenings, planning fun-filled activities that helped students relax and connect.
The week kicked off with a glow-in-the-dark scavenger hunt, igniting teamwork and laughter across campus. A relaxed outdoor movie night, featuring “The Minecraft Movie,” complete with popcorn and cotton candy, gave students a chance to unwind. Midweek brought high energy with a night of cosmic bowling, arcade games, painting, pizza and wings. A spirited pool party closed out the week with music, water games and popsicles to beat the summer heat.
“The evening moments truly became the heart of the experience,” said Gutierrez. “The heart of this summer’s success lay in the exceptional work of our coaching team. This year’s group brought together a dynamic mix of seasoned mentors and enthusiastic first-time leaders, each contributing energy, compassion and a deep commitment to student growth.
“Our coaches made sure every student felt seen, supported and celebrated,” added Gutierrez. “That’s what made the week so special.”
That supportive environment paved the way for students to thrive both personally and academically.
“The students truly enjoyed both programs,” said Cuevas-Zaragoza. “They gained valuable skills, built meaningful friendships and left inspired to step into leadership roles.”
