Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus will hold a number of events during November as part of Native American Heritage Month to honor and celebrate Native American culture, traditions and contributions.
 
The events include:

  • Nov. 4, noon-3 p.m.  Opening welcome to the Native American Heritage Month Celebration. CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales will welcome attendees to the event, which will feature speakers, bird singers from the San Manuel Band of Native Americans, the Bear Springs singers and dancers, and Native American arts and crafts at the CSUSB lower Meeting Center.
  • Nov. 5, noon-1 p.m. at Staff Development Center. Coyote Learning Circle, “Two Spirit: Decolonizing Identity in the LGBTQ+ Community,” a talk focusing on Native American Heritage month, specifically Native Americans and the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Nov. 12, noon-1:30 p.m. at the SMSU Events Center.  Conversations on Diversity, “Confronting the Use of Native American Mascots in the 21st Century,” a talk by Native American artist, educator and activist Charlene Teters will talk about her experiences in protesting the use of Native Americans as sports mascots and her work as an artist.
  • Nov. 17, 2-5 p.m.  “Menil and Her Heart,” a Cahuilla play focusing on the contemporary issue of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, written by 17-year-old Isabella Madrigal of Temecula and a member of the Cahuilla Band of Indians, will be performed at the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus Indian Wells Theater.
  • Nov. 19, 4-6 p.m. at the Santos Manuel Student Union Events Center.  Coyote Learning Circle, “Two Spirit: Decolonizing Identity in the LGBTQ+ Community,” a talk focusing on Native American Heritage month, specifically Native Americans and the LGBTQ+ community.

 
In 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since 1994, according to the Native American Heritage Month website.
