CSUSB Director of Athletics Shawn Farrell has announced that Chelsea Herman has been named the department’s senior associate athletic director/senior women’s administrator.

Herman has more than 17 years of senior-level experience at the Division I level, most recently the last six years at Seattle University.

“I am extremely honored to be named senior associate AD/SWA at CSUSB and believe our department is poised to continue a championship culture and provide a tremendous student-athlete experience,’’ she said. “I would like to thank director of athletics, Shawn Farrell, Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Brian Haynes, Associate VP Bob Tenczar, the search committee, coaches, staff, student-athletes and all of those who welcomed me the minute I stepped onto campus.  There is a high level of pride and passion within the university and I am thrilled to have found my pack!”

Herman’s tenure at Seattle included two years as its assistant athletic director for compliance/SWA after four years as the university’s compliance coordinator.

At Seattle, Herman’s duties included coordinating the school’s NCAA compliance program, especially dealing with initial student-athlete eligibility and admissions as well as continuing rules education for student-athletes, coaches, and athletics staff. As SWA, Herman represented the athletics program at various Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and NCAA meetings, and responsible for handling matters relating to gender equity.

Herman came to Seattle from Boise State (2006-11), where she oversaw advising for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, wrestling, swimming and diving, and men’s golf teams while also serving as an instructor for First-Year Seminar for Student-Athlete courses. Herman also played an active role in their CHAMPS/Life Skills (BroncoLIFE) program as well as serving two years as tutor coordinator. Additionally, she developed an intensive five-week curriculum Summer Bridge program for incoming freshman football players.

“Chelsea Herman is highly respected by her peers and is a tremendous addition to CSUSB Athletics,’’ Farrell said. “It is very clear from those that have worked alongside Chelsea that she cares greatly for the student-athletes and she has a true passion for college athletics. We are very excited to welcome Chelsea to Coyotes Nation.”

Prior to her service in Boise, she served in the Gonzaga Athletic Department as an academic advising intern, taught graduate level statistics and educational measurement at Washington State University, and was a research assistant for the Center for ETHICS* at the University of Idaho.

Herman earned her undergraduate degree in physical education and health from Gonzaga in 1997 where she captained the women’s basketball team at point guard. After her playing career, she earned her master’s degree in sport ethics and sports administration, and her Ph.D. from the University of Idaho. Her dissertation was “Athletic Identity and Transitional Loss of Division I Student-Athletes,” and she helped author a life skills/character curriculum for University of Georgia freshman football players.
