About 125 students were honored at the 25th annual Black Graduation held recently by the CSUSB Black Faculty, Staff and Student Association at Coussoulis Arena.

The ceremony, which took place on June 2, is a cultural recognition for graduating black students. About 2,500 family, friends and supporters were at the arena to celebrate with the students.

Claudia Davis, an associate professor of nursing, served as the event’s mistress of ceremony, welcoming the students and the attendees and later giving the closing remarks.

The celebration featured a video message from CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales, who was unable to attend.

“It is so important that parents, educators and community organizations work together to increase the number of African-American students who graduate from college. Today we celebrate that accomplishment,” Morales said.

Brian Haynes, vice president of Student Affairs, praised the students for their hard work and determination.

“I have had the opportunity to get to know you throughout my years here at CSUSB. Many of these students have persevered in the face of considerable challenges, making their accomplishments even more impressive,” Haynes said. “You have worked hard, made sacrifices and demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, and we applaud you for your accomplishments.

“Remember to seize this day and take a moment to reflect on what it took for you to get to this point in your life. Learn to embrace the challenges you will no doubt face as you continue on your journey,” Haynes said. “Great things are ahead for our graduates! I know how far each and every one of you can go.”

The participating graduates, wearing cap and gowns were each presented with a Kente sash during the ceremony as well as a certificate of recognition and a T-shirt.
