Ethics and leadership in higher education on the global stage will be the focus of a March 16-17 workshop that will bring academic leaders from throughout Latin America and other parts of the world to Cal State San Bernardino.

The Global Imperative for Higher Education Leadership will be hosted by the CSUSB College of Business and Public Administration and the Latin American Commission for Administration Schools, also known by its acronym in Spanish, CLADEA. The workshop will feature two days of interactive workshops led by experts and university leaders.

“This workshop is a wonderful opportunity for Inland Empire educational leaders and academics to come together with colleagues from Latin America to share ideas on and solutions to the leadership and ethics challenges they face,” said Kimberly Collins, a CSUSB associate professor of public administration and faculty liaison to CLADEA.

Cal State San Bernardino is partnering with CLADEA, which is an international, non-profit organization headquartered in Peru, that joins higher education institutions and other international organizations devoted to teaching and research in the field of business administration. Its membership includes more than 200 institutions from Latin America, North America, Europe and Oceania.

Lawrence C. Rose, dean of the College of Business and Public Administration, said becoming a member of CLADEA as “an opportunity to create relationships with many business schools in Central and South America. This is a great benefit to our students, faculty, and to the Inland-Empire.”

The conference will feature a number of speeches, panel sessions and workshops on a variety of topics that include:

  • “Global Education: Crucial Organizational Leadership Behaviors,” led by CSUSB Professor Montgomery Van Wart, one of the leading experts in the field of public administration. Van Wart’s talk will focus on the top emerging trends in executive leadership such as e-leadership, horizontal leadership and global leadership.
  • “Ethics and Leadership in an Era of Globalization,” featuring CSUSB professor of management Breena Coates, whose talk will focus on ethics and corporate social responsibility in governance, business, and the role of higher education. “Leadership in Higher Education” led by Paul Danczyk, of the University of Southern California State Capital Center. Danczyk’s presentation reviews the emergence of functional silos and identifies connections between relationships and outcomes. It offers new perspectives on “problem solving” through appreciative inquiry that may be applied to educational leadership.
  • A discussion and application to real world cases in the United States and Latin America with university leaders talking about their own experiences featuring Tomás D. Morales, president of California State University, San Bernardino; Kim Wilcox, chancellor of the University of California, Riverside; and Jorge Talavera, rector of ESAN University in Lima, Peru.
  • “Working in Your Communities to Enhance Leadership and Ethics,” a panel session on leadership, ethics and developing communities. This session will discuss how to use leadership and ethics as a daily part of working with the local business community, in the university community, in developing a community based board of directors, etc. Speakers include: Andy Carey, CEO Border Philanthropy Project, Bill Stevenson, Vice President of Community Bank and Paul Granillo, CEO, Inland Empire Economic Partnership.
