The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has honored the Cal State San Bernardino men’s soccer team for the second consecutive season with its team academic award, the organization announced today, Thursday, Oct. 6.
Under the direction of interim head coach Darren Leslie, the Coyotes collectively earned a 3.30 grade point average for the team roster of 2014-15. The Coyotes' honor in 2015 was the first time in school history they had been so honored.
'The men backed up their inaugural honor a year ago, and coach Leslie and his staff are to be congratulated,'' said Meghan McGarry, CSUSB athletics academic advisor. 'The program's commitment to academic excellence is indeed a worthy achievement.''
A total of 892 soccer teams (314 men, 578 women) from throughout the United States have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2015-16 academic year.
CSUSB is among 222 schools receiving honors for both their men and women's teams. The Coyotes and UC San Diego are the only CCAA men's teams honored.
To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players.
The Coyotes (5-3-1, 3-2-1 CCAA) are at home this weekend when they take on Cal State East Bay (Friday, Oct. 6) and Stanislaus State (Sunday, Oct. 7).
