In its annual College Guide and Rankings, Washington Monthly magazine ranked Cal State San Bernardino in the top 10 for the categories Best Bang for the Buck in the West and for national universities with master’s programs. “Being ranked in the top ten is a testament to CSUSB’s promise to student success,” said CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales. “We are committed to offering our students a quality and affordable education, and are truly proud of this prestigious recognition.” CSUSB ranked No. 8 in the magazine’s Best Bang for the Buck list in the Western region, which ranks colleges and universities that help non-wealthy students obtain affordable marketable degrees. Out of 50 institutions ranked in the West, 17 California State Universities (CSU) made the list, with five other CSUs making it to the top ten, including Stanislaus State at No. 1, CSU Bakersfield at No. 2, Cal State LA at No. 6 and Cal Maritime Academy at No. 7. “The Best Bang for the Buck colleges across each of the five regions are a mix of America’s most elite institutions and hidden gems that make up for a lack of name recognition with strong outcomes and a commitment to social mobility,” the magazine reads. CSUSB also ranked No. 3 for universities that offer master’s degrees. Out of 150 institutions, three other CSUs made the top ten, including Stanislaus State at No. 4, CSU Bakersfield at No.5 and Cal State LA at No. 6. A total of 14 CSUs made the master’s list. Washington Monthly measures colleges and universities based on what they are doing for the country, and bases their rankings on three equally weighted portions: social mobility (recruiting low-income students), research (producing innovative scholarships and Ph.D.s), and community and national service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).  “This means that top-ranked colleges needed to be excellent across the full breadth of our measures, rather than excelling in just one measure,” the magazine reads. CSUSB also made the top 10 in last year’s Washington Monthly rankings in the same categories. To view all the 2018 College Guide and Rankings, visit the Washington Monthly website. For more information on Cal State San Bernardino, contact the university’s Office of Strategic Communication at (909) 537-5007 and visit inside.csusb.edu
