CSUSB professor interviewed on pipe bombs sent to Democrats and CNNKCBS-AM Radio San FranciscoOct. 24. 2018 Brian Levin, CSUSB criminal justice professor and director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, was interviewed about his initial impressions the explosive devices sent on Oct. 24 to prominent Democrats, including former President Barak Obama, and CNN. He cautioned that such impressions often are wrong and offered this: “We have three types of people that undertake this type of symbolic violence. The first is the ideologically motivated, or it could be political or religious – this looks like political, obviously. Second, the psychologically dangerous, unstable or cognitively impaired, or a sociopath. Third, personal benefit or revenge. “The obvious thing is some ideologically motivated group of persons,” Levin said. “I think it’s going to be smaller rather than bigger – so a loner or a duo. … I do think that until we get more evidence in, the obvious is probably the best way to go. But here’s the thing that investigators do: they will look at every lead and this person will get caught.” He also commented on whether there is concern that more explosive devices could be sent “because these people thrive on taking people and large institutions and putting them in a state of unease.” Listen to a podcast of the interview at “Terror expert on the pipe bombs sent to Democrats and CNN.”

Political favors may have factored into Turkish president’s comments on Khashoggi slaying, CSUSB professor saysPressTVOct. 24, 2018 David Yaghoubian, CSUSB professor of history, was interviewed about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had promised to disclose more details on the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but instead appeared to repeat what news media had reported, including speculation about Khashoggi’s death. Many have said that the government of Saudi Arabia may have ordered Khashoggi killed; the government’s official stance has bee that the journalist died in an interrogation gone bad. “President Erdogan seems to be willing to withhold details of the case, potentially in the interest of garnering favor from the United States and preserving relationships with the three nations,” Yaghoubian said.
