Thelma Moore-Steward, professor of Educational Leadership and Technology in the College of Education, passed away on March 23, 2016. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1948, she attended UCLA and Compton Community College before earning her B.A. and M.A. at CSU-Dominguez Hills. and then her Doctorate (Education) from the University of Southern California. She began in career in education in Inglewood; her advancement took her to the La Palma School District, then eastwards to St. Louis, further eastwards to Boston, and then back to California as a Superintendent in Richmond.  She taught at CSU-Long Beach for six years, and then transferred to CSUSB where she taught for an additional ten years. At CSUSB, she chaired the Educational Leadership and Curriculum department, where she taught classes in educational administration and was a foundation faculty member of the educational doctorate degree (EdD).  Per her obituary, she also taught classes at the University of Southern California. A fellow faculty member, Dr. Angela Louque, recalled the experience of travelling to Ghana with her on a Professors across Borders grant to study leadership in schools.  “The experience was an example of Thelma’s love of learning, love of learning about African culture and practices, and integrating that learning into teaching at the university.” According to colleague Twillea Evans-Carthen, “She participated in the ‘Conversations on Diversity’ series, and was a trainer of other diversity trainers.”  She was active in a number of causes and charities.  Music was also very important to her as an accomplished cellist, alto vocalist and member of church and community choirs. Family was her lifeblood, and her list of survivors reflected that:  her husband John Steward; ten siblings: Melvin Henry Moore, Ralph Lee Moore, Arthur James Moore, Ethel Delores Moore-Ford, Dorothy Ellen Moore-Brown, Elizabeth Moore Burt, Lloyd Edward Moore (Ima), Francis Ezekiel Moore (Cheryl), Catherine P Moore Primus (Chris), and Paul Andrew Moore (Jacquelyn); 1 sister-in-law: Peggy Moore; over 80 nieces and nephews; many maternal and paternal cousins; 2 grandsons: Jabari and Asaiah Steward; 1 daughter-in-law, La Tanya Leslie; 2 stepsons: Julius and Jabari Steward; and a host of extended family, colleagues and friends.
