It was quite the greeting the Cal State San Bernardino Forensics Team received when their plane landed at the Ontario International Airport recently.

'A special welcome home to the Cal State Forensics Team and congratulations on your tournament wins!' the flight crew announced as the passengers on the plane cheered.

The team had just returned from the “Spring Fling” tournament at Ohlone College in the San Francisco Bay Area community of Fremont, held on April 29.

Competing against students from 18 schools — including San Jose State, San Francisco State, Sacramento State and community colleges from northern and central California — CSUSB brought home two second place wins and a third place win.

“The dedication and enthusiasm of this team is amazing,” said Amy Wassing, CSUSB director of forensics. “They are determined to make CSUSB a well-recognized name in collegiate forensics, so plan to see more trophies for our team in the coming season.”

Erik Estrada’s second place win came in the Impromptu Speaking category, where he competed with 47 other students, and Fatima Rivera-Ortiz took second in the After Dinner Speaking category. She was joined by teammate Theresa Salas, who took third place.

Also of note was Karen Moreno’s effort: she was a finalist in the Informative Speaking category, which had 20 students competing.

CSUSB individual entries included Daniel Urenda and Tejwant Brar, Impromptu Speaking; and Oscar Lobos and Amanda McFarland, Dramatic Interpretation.

And CSUSB also performed well in the Parliamentary Debate, which is a team category. The teams were: Tejwant Brar and Gabriel Robles; Janelle Hrycyk and Josefina Valdivia; Natalie Gayoso and Amanda McFarland; and Oscar Lobos and Sean Maulding.
