TODAY: Music, spoken word make for great accompanists at Hagedorn exhibit

Music and poetry will play supporting roles when they join the Edward Hagedorn exhibit, “Volcanoes, Wrecks, Riots, Nudes and Mythology,” today, Thursday, Nov. 17, 6-8 p.m. at Cal State San Bernardino’s Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art.

From the effects of war to the beauty of female nudes, from lonely prison cells to starry night skies, the subjects depicted in the varied and colorful art of Edward Hagedorn are reflected in this program of songs, chamber music and poetry.

Soprano Shana Blake Hill, tenor Thomas Segen and pianist Victoria Kirsch will perform songs and operatic selections by European composers, some of whom escaped their war-torn continent and came to the U.S. in the first part of the twentieth century: Hanns Eisler, Kurt Weill, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Gustav Mahler, Francis Poulenc, Henry Duparc and Ivor Gurney, as well as Mexican-American Daniel Catán.

“Volcanoes, Wrecks, Riots, Nudes and Mythology: The Art of Edward Hagedorn” will be on display through Dec. 10.

The exhibition feature examples of Hagedorn’s most important works from the mid-1920s through 1940s including his motifs of the nude, the landscape and the horrors of war.
