About the Guide
The Best Practice Guide on this page and its corresponding resources were created by the Diversity and Equity in Promotion, Tenure, and Hiring (DEPTH) Center, which is supported by an NSF ADVANCE grant. The DEPTH Center was created with the purpose of identifying best practices in faculty hiring and evaluation, adapting the practices to match CSUSB’s specific context and needs, integrating the practices into practical resources, and sharing those resources with faculty hiring and evaluation committees. All products provided by the DEPTH Center are developed collaboratively with faculty representatives from each college, the Faculty Senate, Faculty Affairs and Development (FAD), affinity groups at CSUSB, and other ADVANCE-recipient institutions (see acknowledgments).
Best Practice Guide for Faculty Hiring
Introduction
The purpose of this document is to provide the user with a guide to best-practices in faculty recruitment and hiring. The organization of this guide corresponds with CSUSB’s goals of 1) increasing faculty diversity and inclusion, 2) hiring quality faculty for success, and 3) making fair and equitable decisions. Additionally, we (the DEPTH team) have developed several resources (e.g., rubrics, advertising checklists, and other sample templates) that can help direct and streamline the faculty recruiting and selection processes. These resources are referenced throughout the guide and can be found in the accompanying online Resource Guide.
Faculty recruitment and hiring is governed by CSUSB policy as well as federal and state law. Before their first meeting, all committee members should be knowledgeable of relevant policy and law. For more information on state and federal law refer to the Faculty Affairs and Development website.
This guide and all its corresponding resources were created by the Diversity and Equity in Promotion, Tenure, and Hiring (DEPTH) Center, which is supported by an NSF ADVANCE grant. The DEPTH Center was created with the purpose of identifying best practices in faculty hiring and evaluation, adapting the practices to match CSUSB’s specific context and needs, integrating the practices into practical resources, and sharing those resources with faculty hiring and evaluation committees. This guide was developed in collaboration with the Faculty Senate, Faculty Affairs and Development (FAD), and other ADVANCE recipient institutions (see acknowledgments).
We recommend that users familiarize themselves with the entire guide prior to beginning the search process, including prior to developing a position description and job ad. We also recommend that search committees attend DEPTH training and utilize the resources accompanying this guide.
