Scanning a Course with UDOIT - What Does UDOIT Look for in Canvas

UDOIT will automatically scan a course once per day. You can scan a course multiple times per day by selecting the "Scan Now" button in the upper right corner.

The first time you access the tool, UDOIT will scan all of the content in your course. This full scan of the content may take a few minutes to complete. In subsequent uses of the tool, UDOIT will only scan new and updated content to complete the scanning process more efficiently.  UDOIT scans both your Canvas Content and the Files you've uploaded, looking for accessibility issues that could cause trouble for your students.

UDOIT - UFIXIT Page

The UFIXIT area of UDOIT is where you will review and address the issues found within your Canvas content. This will include issues like naming links descriptively, providing alt text for your images, ensuring accurate color contrast, and checking videos for captioning (Note: UDOIT currently only scans YouTube, Vimeo, and Kaltura to identify captions that have been auto-generated).

UFIXIT

The Summary bar at the top of the UFIXIT area will continue to reflect the number of issues that are outstanding and addressed to give you a sense of the progress that has been made.

UDOIT - Review Files Page

The Review Files area of UDOIT is where you will see a list of all documents in a course. This area can help identify and fix accessibility issues inside files that are stored within your Canvas courses. Important: Images files are not displayed in the Review Files section. Accessibility considerations for images are handles in the UFIXIT area.

  • UDOIT is built to scan and create alternate formats for Word (DOC, DOCX) and PDF files.

  • UDOIT integrates with one of the premier accessibility partners, ABBYY FineReader, to provide an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) scan of your flatbed scanned text documents.

  • At this time it is not possible for UDOIT to check quiz questions or question banks in Canvas, but it does check quiz descriptions.

  • UDOIT is not able to scan Google Docs, but as a workaround, you can download the file from Google, upload it into Canvas, scan and remediate the file, replace the original file on their Google drive with the remediated one, and then use that file moving forward.

UDOIT - Course Accessibility Reports

UDOIT provides a Reports area where you can view a history of scanning and issue resolution activity for your course content and files. You can also download your reports in PDF or CSV format. To access reports, click the three dots in the upper right corner of the UDOIT page. From the drop-down menu, select either “Download PDF” to view a summary of individual issues (with a total count at the top), or “Reports” to choose a specific report type and date range directly within Canvas.

UDOIT allows you to choose from multiple Report Types. For each Report Type, you can select a Duration (from Current to 30-180 days), to view historical report data. Each Report Type will display a graph, followed by a table of data. Hovering over the graph will provide specific numerical counts for each tracked metric.

Scorecard report tracks the Average Total Score and Average Category Score for the account/subaccount.

UDOIT - Alternative Formats for Students

UDOIT allows students to quickly access alternate file formats, from wherever they are in Canvas.

For each alternate format that is available, a student may:

  • Download the file

  • View the file in a new tab

The alternative formats don’t affect your original file, and allow students to access content in multiple formats. See image of UDOIT Alternative Formats for students below.
