Winner of the CSUSB 2022-23 Outstanding Professor Award

Professor Monty Van Wart, the 2022-23 Outstanding Professor, also received the CSU Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award for his work to advance student success through in online teaching.

Montgomery ‘Monty’ Van Wart, professor of public administration, honored with 2022-23 Outstanding Professor Award

Montgomery "Monty" Van Wart, a professor of public administration at Cal State San Bernardino, was named CSUSB's 2022-23 Outstanding Professor. He has served many roles at CSUSB, including interim dean of the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration (JHBC) where he was also a longtime chair of the Department of Public Administration. He currently serves as the director of faculty development for the JHBC and the Faculty Research Fellow for the university.

Prior to CSUSB, he was the chair of the Department of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida. He was also a Senior Research Fellow at KU Leuven (formerly Catholic University) in Belgium (2012-13), a visiting professor at Rutgers (2013), and a visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong and the National University of Ireland, Galway.

In 2019, Van Wart was honored by the California State University with the system’s Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award (FILA). Van Wart, who has taught at the JHBC since 2005, was one of 19 faculty members from throughout the CSU who were honored on Oct. 17, 2019 with the FILA award for having demonstrated extraordinary leadership to advance student success at the CSU. The recipients were honored during the annual Graduation Initiative 2025 Symposium, held in Sacramento in 2019. He was recognized for improving program quality and student outcomes specifically in his leadership in online teaching.

As a champion of online teaching, he was the first at CSUSB to provide Quality Matters certified classes. He has done extensive pedagogical research and has worked hard to ensure that he applies those insights to his own teaching. 

Van Wart has over 150 publications and received the University Outstanding Research Award in 2015. He has written eight textbooks and received the Sage Cornerstone Author Award and Best Public Sector HR Book award from the American Society for Public Administration.

Van Wart obtained his Ph.D. in public administration from Arizona State University.
