- Be PATIENT with yourself and others during this experience.
- Revisit the stages of culture shock and plan strategies to cope.
- Use resources such as language tutors, friends, teachers, etc., to enhance your study abroad experience and learn more about the “real” Jordan.
- Make sure you always have a charged cell phone.
- If you are keeping your U.S. phone, inquire with your cell phone provider BEFORE you leave so that you are not surprised by unexpected fees (roaming charges, etc.).
- Look into WhatsApp or some other cell phone app for getting around fees.
- Have ALL emergency protocol names and numbers in your phone.
- Also keep a paper copy of this information available.
- Talk to your bank to figure out financial procedures BEFORE you leave.
- Research a credit card that does not charge fees for overseas transactions IN ADVANCE.
- DO NOT exchange currency at any airport—it’s very expensive.
- Unless there is an emergency, it is not mandatory that you register with the U.S. embassy in Jordan.
- Keep all receipts from purchases to charge against any scholarships or stipends you receive.
- The tap water in Amman is not considered drinkable. Everyone buys bottled water to use for drinking and even for cleaning teeth. Try to keep water out of your face while showering.
- Internet access is available at Qasid and can be purchased for your apartment as well.
