AI Steering Committee

The CSUSB AI Steering Committee was formed in Fall 2025 with approval from the IT Governance Executive Committee to set and prioritize AI strategies at CSUSB. The steering committee and respective subcommittees are established to have wide representation of faculty, students, staff, and administrators across campus.

Charge

The AI Steering Committee provides strategic leadership and institutional oversight for the thoughtful evaluation and responsible integration of artificial intelligence across CSUSB. The committee coordinates the work of its subcommittees to ensure that AI initiatives advance the university’s mission, uphold ethical standards, promote equity and accessibility, create meaningful improvements in student success, teaching, learning, and operations, and position CSUSB to be a leader in Artificial Intelligence in the Inland Empire.

Expected Outcomes

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive university-wide AI strategy, guiding subcommittees in advancing aligned priorities.
  • Establish and maintain guidelines for the ethical, inclusive, and transparent use of AI across university functions.
  • Recommend and pilot initiatives that use AI to enhance student learning, well-being, engagement, and success.
  • Oversee assessment and reporting of AI initiatives, informed by subcommittee evaluation and data.
  • Foster collaboration among subcommittees to ensure integrated and coordinated progress across institutional domains.

Student Experience and Success

Charge

The Student Experience and Success Subcommittee explores, evaluates, and implements AI technologies that enhance the holistic student experience. The group identifies ways AI can improve engagement, advising, support services, retention, and overall well-being, ensuring that all implementations are equitable, accessible, and responsive to student needs.

 

 

Expected Outcomes

  • Document and analyze the student experience of GenAI: Look at data from the systemwide survey, including items on student attitudes towards GenAI use in instruction.
  • Develop strategies and resources to promote student AI literacy in academic and co-curricular contexts.
  • Create ethical and inclusive guidelines for AI use in student-facing applications and services.
  • Assess and report on the impact of AI-enabled tools on student success, satisfaction, and belonging.
  • Facilitate listening sessions and feedback mechanisms to understand student perspectives and experiences with AI.
  • Documenting/analyzing student experience in AI.

Teaching, Learning, and Research

Charge

The Teaching, Learning, and Research Subcommittee advances the integration of AI into curriculum design, pedagogy, and scholarly activity. The group supports faculty development in AI literacy, encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, and promotes responsible and transparent use of AI in research and instruction.

 

 

Expected Outcomes

  • Develop and disseminate best practices for integrating AI into teaching and learning across disciplines. 
  • Address both how to make assignments and assessments AI-resistant; and how to use AI’s capabilities to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Facilitate professional development and community-of-practice opportunities for faculty and staff on AI tools and methods.
  • Support faculty and student research projects that leverage AI, including assistance with grants and dissemination.
  • Establish standards for transparency, academic integrity, and equity in AI-enhanced teaching and scholarship.

Operational Efficiencies and Support Subcommittee

Charge

The Operational Efficiencies and Support Subcommittee identifies and promotes AI-driven solutions that enhance campus operations, data-informed decision-making, and resource management. The subcommittee ensures that all applications uphold privacy, accuracy, and ethical responsibility while supporting institutional effectiveness.

  • Analyze key administrative processes and recommend AI applications that improve efficiency, accuracy, and user experience.
  • Create metrics to evaluate the performance and value of AI-enabled operational tools.
  • Ensure adherence to data privacy, accessibility, and ethical standards in all implementations.
  • Provide training and capacity-building for staff using AI-enhanced systems and processes.

Policies and Ethical Use Subcommittee

Charge

The Policy and Ethical Use Subcommittee evaluates, develops and maintains institutional frameworks that protect academic freedom, privacy, equity, and accountability in AI adoption and governance. The group monitors evolving technologies and ethical considerations to guide responsible decision-making across the university.

 

 

Expected Outcomes

  • Review existing campus and CSU policies for applicability to AI.
  • Establish and share a university-wide framework for ethical AI use, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and inclusivity.
  • Implement systems for continuous review, risk assessment, and oversight of AI tools and data practices.
  • Create processes for reporting, evaluating, and addressing ethical or operational concerns related to AI use.
  • Engage with university stakeholders and external partners to align CSUSB’s policies with emerging national and global standards.
