This July, Professor Timothy Pytell of the CSUSB History Department contributed an article to the journal, Psychology Today, titled, “Law, Witnessing, and the 'Grey Zone': Teaching genocide in the Age of Prevention.” This article explored the pedagogy of genocide especially through the lens and experience of author and Holocaust survivor, Primo Levi (1919-1987), and is just the latest contribution by Dr. Pytell to the popular journal, in a series titled, “On Authoritarian Therapy: Historical tales of 20th century psychology.”

In Dr. Pytell’s contributions to Psychology Today, he has covered topics ranging from authoritarianism and American fascism, to the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol, to the challenges of understanding the political motivations of those we disagree with. He has also contributed work on the Austrian scholar, psychiatrist, and Holocaust survivor, Viktor Frankl (1905-1997), a figure about whom Dr. Pytell is an authority and has published numerous books and articles.
