Continuous Enrollment Policy
The University requires that graduate students must file a leave of absence form if they will not be enrolled, EVEN for a single quarter.
If you do not enroll for one or more quarters AND do not file a leave of absence form and then wish to return to the program, you will lose your catalog rights and must reapply to the University; if readmitted, you will be subject to the current catalog requirements for the program.
Leave of Absence Form
If you will not be enrolling for next quarter, please complete the leave of absence form available from the Graduate Studies website (gradstudies.csusb.edu) and contact the coordinator of your concentration as soon as possible so that s/he can sign this leave before it is submitted for review to Graduate Studies.
ENG 697 : Thesis and Comprehensive Examination Independent Study
- English 697D (4 units, CR/NC)
- English 697F (6 units, CR/NC)
This course should be taken by students who have:
- completed their course work but have not yet had a thesis proposal approved by the Graduate Committee;
or
- been enrolled in the thesis units (ENG 699A/B) but have not yet filed their completed thesis with the Graduate Studies office;
or
- completed their coursework and wish to stay enrolled while studying for the comprehensive exam.
Please note that students in the categories above also have the alternative of enrolling in ENG 698: Continuous Enrollment (0-6 units) if they prefer. In addition, students who have completed all coursework and are studying for the comprehensive exam have the option of taking a leave of absence for the quarters they are studying. ENG 698 does NOT count toward a student's financial aid units.
ENG 697 and 698 require a permit to enroll from the coordinator of your concentration, so contact your coordinator for a permit if one of these courses applies to you.
Holds on Registration
If you are in conditionally classified status (you were admitted needing prerequisite classes and/or the Graduate Entrance Writing Requirement), an advising hold will be in place for your registration. In order to have the hold lifted, you will need to contact the coordinator of your concentration for advisement and approval of your course selection. If you want to register on time, you'll need to do this before your registration date; allow at least 48 hours (2 business days) for the hold to be lifted. These holds will continue to appear quarterly until the conditions precluding you from classified status are met and your coordinator has updated your status. Please note that University regulations require that you meet those conditions before you complete 12 graduate units.
Permits Required
Permits are required for the following courses (see a-f below). When requesting a permit from your coordinator via e-mail, please include in your message your Coyote ID number.
- ENG 662, 663 and 664: Internships in Composition, Literature, or TESL. In order for a permit to be issued for the internship units, you must follow the instructions on the website, acquire a Faculty Mentor, complete the Internship Contract, and provide the required copy to the coordinator of your concentration. Internships must be arranged by the 8th week of the preceding quarter. Please also note that the internship requires regular weekly participation in Blackboard discussion boards and completion of assigned readings, in addition to your work in your Faculty Mentor's class (your grade reflects your completion of all required elements of the internship, including the online component).
- ENG 695: Prerequisites for ENG 695 are completion of ENG 609 and 24 units in the program. Request a permit to enroll from your coordinator if you have met these prerequisites.
- ENG 697: the CR/NC 4-6 unit course described above; request a permit to enroll from your coordinator.
- ENG 698: Continuous Enrollment, 0-6 units (see description above); request a permit to enroll from your coordinator.
- ENG 699A and/or 699B: the thesis research units. In order to enroll in these units, you must have your thesis proposal approved by the Graduate Committee; request a permit to enroll from your coordinator.
- ENG 999: Comprehensive Examination, 0 units. Students planning to take the Comprehensive Examination must meet with the coordinator of their concentration by CENSUS date of the previous quarter and sign a form declaring their intent to take the exam. Prerequisites: ENG 695, advancement to candidacy, approval of the Graduate Coordinator, and good academic standing. Students may not enroll in ENG 999 before their last quarter of coursework in the M.A. in English Composition. The exam is offered only in Fall and Spring Quarters, not in Winter.
Please note that permits merely allow you to enroll in a given course; you must still pay your fees and enroll in the course through MyCOYOTE and meet all enrollment deadlines.
Course Listing
A listing of graduate courses for both the current and upcoming academic years are usually available on the M.A. program's website, updated with recent changes; don't forget to refresh your browser to see the most recent version. Descriptions of topics courses for the upcoming quarter are also available on the main English Department website.
Enrolling in Electives
If you plan to enroll in a course to fulfill an elective requirement, you must contact your coordinator to have that elective approved.
Completing a Program Plan
If you have completed at least 16 units in the program, contact your coordinator to complete a Program Plan, which advances you to Candidacy. You must have a Program filed at least one quarter before the quarter you plan to graduate, and earlier is preferable.
Checking With Your Coordinator
Finally, please remember you are all welcome (and indeed encouraged!) to contact your coordinator for advising at any stage in the program; we also encourage you to regularly access the information on the website.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE CHECKING YOUR CSUSB EMAIL ACCOUNT TO RECEIVE IMPORTANT ANNOUNCMENTS FROM YOUR COORDINATORS ON THE ENGMA LISTSERV.
