What advice would you give to new transfer students coming to CSUSB?

My advice to transfer students coming to CSUSB it to not give up! You are halfway through your journey so keep pushing through. Also, I would advise students to take advantage of all of the resources that CSUSB has available.

Why are you proud to be a transfer student? Provide highlights of your college career so far.

I am proud of being a transfer student for three reasons. The first reason I am proud is because I am the first person in my family to attend a Cal-State! This also means that I will be the first person in my family to have a Bachelor's degree. Second, I am proud of being a transfer student because I did not give up and I managed to stay determined in pursuing my educational goal. There were many times while I was in community college when I wanted to give up and drop out. However, I always managed to stay focused. Third, I am proud because I am a role model to my niece who is currently a senior in high school. I am proud to a motivation for her and remind her that it is okay to earn a Bachelor's degree in more time than expected.

What was the most challenging part of being a transfer student? How did you overcome it?

The most challenging part of being a transfer student is transferring to this school alone. When I say alone I mean that I did not have any friends or family who were a first year student like I was. This lead for me to feel alone. After the few couple of weeks I overcame this sense of loneliness by meeting students in my classes. Additionally, I joined programs like the 2-year pledge program and mentoring program where I had a great support system.

What is the best part of being a transfer student? What makes transfer students special?

The best part about being a transfer student is knowing that I had to work a little longer and harder to be able to get into a Cal-State. I started my educational journey at community college where it was hard to get classes. Not being able to get the classes I needed made it difficult to finish my Associate's degree in Sociology on time. What should have taken me two years to finish ended up taking me close to four years. I think having faith, staying determined, and pushing through community college makes transfer students special.
