Dia De Los Muertos: The Day of the Dead Celebrated at CSUSB

Did you know…

In Mexico (as well as other Latin American regions) Dia De Los Muertos is a two-day holiday celebrated in the remembrance of those who are no longer with us; November 1st and November 2nd. These two days are known for the time spirits come to visit and return home to be with loved ones. The preparation of this holiday begins days prior in order to embrace the collective love for the lost. People decorate their homes, grave sites, and cities with beautiful Cempasúchil flowers otherwise known as Marigold flowers. Towns and cities are flourished with the vibrant orange color of these flowers and its aura creates a welcoming feeling for the loved ones visitation. People also put out family loved dishes, drinks, trinkets and candles for the dead under altars created for them. These altars include pictures of the lost family, friends, pets, that continue to live amongst their hearts. Calaveras are also a symbol of celebration for the dead as they are beautifully crafted and decorated skulls placed amongst these alters to represent the beauty in the dead. This holiday is a beautiful way to continue the life of those who now live in our memories. May their stories, legacies and remembrance live on forever!
